Around twenty-five thousand households in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on Monday morning after intense storm systems passed over the area, producing powerful gusts topping over 100 km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Impact

Residents observed large ice chunks as large as seven centimeters in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology announced that various areas across the state had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were working to restore electricity service throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams activated to address the extensive power failures.

Victoria's Weather Woes

Simultaneously, around one thousand households in Victoria also faced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area saw its wettest day in over 500 days.

Emergency response teams responded to 598 emergency reports across the area, mainly for structural issues but also for downed trees and water accumulation.

• Werribee region - recorded significant weather impact
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham - over 175 emergency requests

At the height on Sunday, more than 28,000 electricity consumers in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Moist weather were forecast to persist along large portions of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a weather pattern continued to attract humidity against the coast.

The following day was expected to become the heaviest precipitation period, with continued storm activity expected across different parts of both regions.

Health Warning

Public health experts alerted that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the ongoing climate situation.

This alert comes after previous incidents where similar conditions led to significant health impacts in the area.
