In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
