Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
